April 22, 2018

What happened to the trees on Rapa Nui (Easter Island)? Popular theory says the Rapa Nui people, best known for the hundreds (over 900) stone moai they left behind, cut down their forests, causing ecocide and collapse. Newly uncovered evidence is changing this old story. It is not one of collapse, but rather one of a resilient place called “the Navel of the World.”
