Afternoon Tea: THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

January 27, 2019

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Littleton
January 27 @ 2:00 p.m.

SIP YOUR WAY THROUGH SCORSESE’S SOFTER SIDE.
A Martin Scorsese film isn’t the typical choice for Afternoon Tea, but THE AGE OF INNOCENCE wasn’t a typical choice for Scorsese.Based on the novel by Edith Wharton, this adaptation tells the story of Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), a man caught between his love for the disgraced Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) and his duty to marry her cousin, May Welland (Winona Ryder, in a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress).

After directing GOODFELLAS and CAPE FEAR, Scorsese traded in brutal violence and high-voltage drama for storytelling tools of a different kind: subtle social warfare, repressed passion, and exquisite fashion – the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Sip and nibble your way through the Gilded Age as hearts are won, rules are broken and scandal looms behind every stolen kiss.

“Taking The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton’s sad and elegantly funny novel about New York’s highest society in the 1870s, Martin Scorsese has made a gorgeously uncharacteristic Scorsese film…The film is the work of one of America’s handful of master craftsmen.”Vincent Canby, The New York Times
