Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel came to horrifying, hilarious life in Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation. Following the day-to-day exploits of yuppie serial killer Patrick Bateman, AMERICAN PSYCHO quickly gained a cult following and a consensus status as one of the best social satires ever made.
At the center of the movie is Christian Bale’s terrifyingly charismatic performance as “murders and executions” executive Bateman, who works in finance by day and murders people by night. Applying the same gusto to speeches about Huey Lewis as he does chainsawing people to death, Bale’s Bateman is alternately charming, hollow, and sadistic – one of cinema’s greatest psychopaths.
Today, AMERICAN PSYCHO holds up beautifully as an indictment of the shallow, unempathetic American upper class – and as an intense and often hilarious thriller. Between its extreme violence, biting satire, and exceptional craftsmanship, AMERICAN PSYCHO is one of the best films ever made about the ‘80s – and about the more psychotic side of America.
