Ballet Ariel’s Carmen

May 16, 2021

Ballet Ariel’s original ballet Carmen Suite is a masterful re-imagining of the classic opera set in 1930’s Spain.
Also on the program is the lovely, romantic style Pas de Quatre.

Ballet Ariel’s original ballet Carmen Suite, by resident choreographer Gregory Gonzales, is a masterful re-imagining of the classic opera. Set in the 1930s and performed to the Carmen Suite by Russian composer, Rodion Shchedrin, who based his suite on the music from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. Ballet Ariel’s Carmen Suite is a 20th century tale of great love and great anguish for the chivalrous Don Jose who surrenders his heart to the fiery gypsy only to lose her to the glamorous toreador Escamillo. As a key member of Ballet Ariel’s creative team, Gonzales is known for his mesmeric, contemporary choreography which comes together with Shchedrin’s colorfully orchestrated music to create a deep and moving modern masterwork.
Also on the program is the historical Pas de Quatre. Staged by rehearsal directors Patricia Renzetti and Oleg Dedogryuk, Ballet Ariel will be performing Anton Dolin’s 1941 version which was recreated from Jules Perrot’s 1845 original. First performed for Queen Victoria, Pas de Quatre was created for the four great ballerinas of the age: Marie Taglioni, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito and Lucile Grahn. Pas de Quatre exemplifies the Romantic style and is the perfect showcase for Ballet Ariel’s ballerinas.
Both of these beautiful ballets will be presented live and in-person at 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 15th and 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 16th at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Performing Arts Complex, at 119 Park Ave West, Denver, CO 80205.
