Denver South Sit Out For Gun Control
March 18, 2014
Denver, CO: At 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 14, a month after the shooting in Parkland, FL., Denver South High School students will participate in a nationwide protest for gun control.
The Sit Out will take place on the front lawn of the school where students and gun control advocates will gather for speeches and observe a moment of silence to honor the victims of school shootings.
Student organizers hope that this gathering, occurring at schools across DPS and the nation, will motivate voters to vote for candidates who will protect our schools and communities against gun violence, and prompt lawmakers to pass gun control legislation.
Students demand:
The minimum age at which one can buy a rifle be increased from 18 to 21
Universal background checks be implemented
Pre-purchase mental health tests and background checks be improved
Background and mental health checks be required at purchase at gun shows
Multi-Burst Trigger Activators (A.K.A Bump Stocks) be banned
National gun background check registries be improved and fully utilized
“We will no longer tolerate gun violence. We demand that action be taken to protect our right to life and education. We need safe schools. We need comprehensive gun control.”
-Student Organizers: Jua Fletcher, Sofia Garcia, Sophie Cardin
