Empowered By Place: From Amache to Denver

May 4, 2022

Amache was a relocation center for Japanese Americans located in southeastern Colorado during WWII. Many families that were imprisoned at the camp came to Denver when the war ended.

We will be discussing recent preservation work at the Amache Relocation Center in Granada, CO. Used from 1941-45 as a relocation center for Japanese Americans living on the West Coast, Amache tells an important story about our past. Colorado Preservation Inc has been working to make the site a national park, and will join us to share their work on the project. Many families came to Denver when the center closed in 1945, including the family of our guest speaker, Derek Okubo, whose family ran Ben’s Market in northeast Denver for years.

Empowered by Place is a conversation about how Denver’s historic places play an important role in our present. Fueled by current issues, we’ll unpack some of the pressing issues by discussing with local experts and encouraging our audience to take part in the dialogue.

This event will run from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
