Hear Retired Denver Police Detective Abe Alonzo present his story and work on the kidnapping and murder of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash in 1975. In 1994, Detective Alonzo and US Marshal Ecoffey worked together on this investigation along with Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator Mitch Pourier, Oglala tribal member and FBI Special Agent James Graf, to spearhead a passionate, relentless 10-year journey whose sole destination was justice for Anna Mae Aquash. This program contains descriptions of graphic violence which some audience members may find distressing.
Retired Denver Police Detective Abe Alonzo is a native Coloradoan who grew up in the city of Denver. He attended Denver public schools and eventually joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. After his service, he joined the Denver Police Department. He worked in various departments and eventually retired from the Narcotics bureau after serving 34 years in the department. He has been married for 44 years to his wife Amy who was also a Denver Police officer. He published a book in 2016 written by Dick Burdette about the investigation of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, “Dances with Fire”.
