Join historian and veteran Jonathan Carroll as he discusses the US intervention in Somalia from 1992-1994. Punctuated by the famous “Black Hawk Down” incident, Carroll will discuss the broader aims and context of US humanitarian and military efforts in the Horn of Africa. Central to this deployment was the 10th Mountain Division, whose proud legacy is tied to rigorous wartime training in the Colorado Rockies during World War II.
Jonathan Carroll is a PhD Candidate in Military History with the Department of History at Texas A&M University. A native of the Republic of Ireland, Jonathan is currently working on writing a military history of the U.S./U.N. military intervention in Somalia from 1992-1995. Known primarily for the 15-hour Battle of Mogadishu, the “Black Hawk Down” incident, Jonathan’s research instead aims to establish what happened during the wider intervention in Somalia, the largest nation building experiment by the US and UN in history at that time. Jonathan’s latest scholarly article on Somalia, Courage Under Fire: Reinterpreting Black Hawk Down and the Battle for Mogadishu is currently being reviewed for publication, and presents new evidence to suggest alternative explanations for what caused the Black Hawk Down incident on October 3rd 1993.
