Join Gregorio Ramon Alcaro for a virtual tour of Casa Mayan at Auraria to celebrate Auraria, the once thriving neighborhood.

Join Gregorio Ramon Alcaro for a virtual tour of Casa Mayan at Auraria to celebrate Auraria, the once thriving neighborhood. Auraria was home to the largest community of Hispano and Mexican Americans in Denver. However, in 1967 the city of Denver voted into law the Urban Skyline Renewal Project which proposed Auraria as the site of a new college campus for Metropolitan State University, Community College of Denver, and the University of Colorado at Denver. The occupants and business owners fought to maintain their homes, community, and church. Despite their appeals, most Auraria occupants were displaced between 1972-1973. Gregorio Ramon Alcaro will share his family’s experiences of the neighborhood through their restaurant, the Casa Mayan, that was once a flourishing business in Auraria.

Gregorio Ramon Alcaro is a Historical Activist and Community Preservationist. He develops educational programs related to the 200 years of Auraria people, places, and events. Gregorio is a Colorado Native whose family roots go back to Denver’s Westside since 1918. As a youth, Gregorio’s mother taught him the history of the Auraria Neighborhood and the family’s cultural center, restaurant, and home. His Aurarian family was the last family displaced in 1974.
