Madam Velvet’s Cabaret of Oddities–book release and original performance
Local author Nancy Stohlman to launch new collection of flash fiction, Madam Velvet’s Cabaret of Oddities, with an original performance on Friday, Oct 26, 2018, at the Mercury Café, Denver.
Local author Nancy Stohlman, called “flash fiction’s poster girl” by Wesword magazine in 2015 and included as #23 of Another 100 Colorado Creatives, will be releasing her 7th book of flash fiction, Madam Velvet’s Cabaret of Oddities on Friday, Oct 26 accompanied by an original staged performance. Stohlman has again teamed up with composer Nick Busheff—the last time they brought an original performance to the stage the wildly popular The Monster Opera.
“Madam Velvet’s Cabaret of Oddities, like The Monster Opera, really lends itself to the stage,” says Stohlman. “The book approaches our collective voyeurism through portrayals of the absurd, almost caricature. The narrator has a clown mother who joins a cult, a father who is trying to beat the world record for anything, a reflection who runs away with a can of Instant Fame, and a suicidal ringmaster. We’ve been having so much fun bringing to the life this vintage world of sideshow barkers and medicine shows.”
Madam Velvet will be available at special performance prices and can be signed by the author/editors.
The show begins at 7:00 pm upstairs in the Mercury Café Ballroom, 2199 California Street, Denver. The interview with James Thomas will happen from 6:30-7:00. Presale tickets are 10$ ($12 at the door) and can be reserved directly at https://nancystohlman.com/madamvelvet/
