Art Gym is excited to announce Descendence by Lynn Mandziuk in Common Space Gallery. Descendence is a series of paintings which use mountains to analyze the line between life and death.

The exhibition will be open from June 20 -July 12. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, June 20 from 5-8PM.

Discussing the series in her artist statement, Mandziuk explains:
“I use the mountains as an allegory for life.  As an outdoor enthusiast, I study the selfish pursuit of finding ourselves in these mountains through emotional and volatile intensity personified in an ever-changing climate.  Even in the perfect conditions, one must be wary.  How does this physical landscape compare with an emotional one?
 
“By using mixed media painting techniques, I juxtapose an expressive painting style with decorative elements, splitting the piece with a life-line of gold leaf. The life-line symbolizes dual contexts: the razor’s edge between life and death in the mountains and a design element inspired in my work since my father’s death 8 years ago representing my link to him through continuing our journey in art.

“Descendence is inspired by the outdoors, decorative artisans, and my dearly departed father who taught (and still teaches) me about life through art.”
