Opening Reception – Other Worldly and Gauntlet Eyes
November 1, 2018
Art Gym Denver is excited to present in the Common Space Gallery Other Wordly by Ingrid vB Porter and Gauntlet Eyes by Hillary Muramoto and Ian Bullard. Join us for the opening reception November 1 from 5 – 8PM. Free and open to the public.
Other Worldly, by Ingrid vB Porter, performs an investigation into how an artist’s personal mythology and metaphor plays into their individual practice. With a background in archetypal art therapy, Porter uses her practice to create art that helps the viewer explore their own lives. Speaking on this, Porter states “I find the intersection of personal story, mythology and psychology to be a rich, fascinating and rewarding place…these elements bring new – and often unexpected – layers of meaning to my paintings and illustrated stories.” One example of this is Porter’s new book titled #Me Too – Persephone which recontextualizes the classic Greek myth in the current #metoo movement.
Ian Bullard’s drawings were described by Hillary Muramoto as the sort of drawings that “take time to look at.” Bullard’s work in Gauntlet Eyes is comprised of intricate, detailed drawings and watercolors that pull the viewer in to spend time exploring each inch of space on the page. Muramoto spent the time she referred to with Bullard’s work when designing her jewelry and metalsmith works to fit with each drawing, creating pieces that exhibit seamlessly with the work. The pair worked together to conceptualize the ideas for a drawing or a piece of jewelry, and then each built on their own work, taking inspiration from each other’s progress.
