Seeds of South Sudan Transforms The Lives of Refugee Orphans
November 10, 2019
Seeds of South Sudan rescues refugee orphans and educates them in Kenya. Over 10 years, donors to the Colorado nonprofit have helped rescue more than 100 refugee children. Hear the inspiring story Nov. 11 at 9:30 am. Free and open to the public.
Seeds board member Sue Counterman will speak and share slides and videos of the students in the Seeds program from her July 2019 trip to Africa. This master teacher planned and conducted a Girls Leadership Day for most of the 21 girls in the program. She will also share the team’s trip to Kakuma Refugee Camp to interview 30 more students to enter the program. There are more than 100,000 South Sudanese refugees in Kenya, most at Kakuma. The refugees receive only one meal a day and no health care. Their school is informal, taught by volunteers. Some of Seeds’ high school graduates have been volunteer teaching in Kakuma while they wait for funds to continue their education so they can build a peaceful, prosperous South Sudan.
Seeds was founded by a former ‘Lost Boy of Sudan’ Arok Garang, who spent nearly 10 years in Kakuma. He felt called to help his fellow South Sudanese. The 501 (c)3 nonprofit is based in Arvada and funds are raised here through donors and sponsors.
Counterman’s talk and slides are inspiring and there will be time for questions. For more information and to see photos of the students, visit seedsofsouthsudan.org.
