St. Martin’s Chamber Choir presents Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore”
October 9, 2015
Modeled on the “Madrigal Comedies” of the Renaissance, Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore” tells the story of a poet who keeps the mythical creatures of the title as pets, which each become fashionable in their turn but are then discarded by the residents of the poet’s town. The entire piece is an allegory of social mores, transient tastes and the fleeting nature of artistic freedom. This production has been scored for string quartet by St. Martin’s Artistic Director Tim Krueger, so this is a world premiere performance. Ballet Arts and the Confluence String Quartet join St. Martin’s in this whimsical and rarely-performed work. Two compositions of Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings and Reincarnations, round out this must see program.
Friday, October 9, 7:30 pm, Saint John’s Episcopal Cathedral, 1350 Washington Street, Denver CO 80203
$25 general admission, $35 premium seating, $10 student
