Many small local museums have avocational archaeological collections. Typically these consist of donated projectile points or other stone tools collected by a local person from their area.
Many small local museums have avocational archaeological collections. Typically these consist of donated projectile points or other stone tools collected by a local person from their area. Colorado, especially Eastern Colorado is almost completely unknown to any professional studies or official recordings. Recently Dr. Jason LaBelle, his former graduate student Marie Matsuda and local Northeast Colorado independent researcher Mr. Mike Toft published an article in “Advances in Archaeological Practice” about how tapping into a collectors knowledge can provide a wealth of new insight and bridge partnerships with collectors and the professional archaeological world. Understanding this new approach and attitude may help small museums/repositories to better identify and utilize these collections. Join us for this presentation and discussion.
Presenter: Jason M. LaBelle Ph.D. Professor of Anthropology
Director, Center for Mountain and Plains Archaeology
Curator, Archaeological Repository of Colorado State University
