From the first moment that “Spade and Archer” silhouette looms over the floor of the detective’s office to Bogey’s infamous final line, this film holds us tight in its grasp and never lets go.

The story was well known (this was the third screen adaptation of the novel of the same name), but Huston made sure his film would be remembered. In addition to his sheer genius as a filmmaker of the highest order, it also helped that everyone else behind the camera, cinematographer Arthur Edeson in particular, was totally on top of their game.

Featuring an A-list cast including Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Mary Astor, THE MALTESE FALCON is a true American classic. It seeps with intrigue, betrayal, back stabbing, and all that good stuff like the gorgeous black-and-white photography, a patented Bogey performance, and so much smoking.
