Urban Folk Music Revival of the 1950s and ’60s
May 16, 2020
Join Active minds as we explore the relationship between the revival of urban folk music and its musical origins.
The urban folk music revival reached certain heights in the 1950s and 1960s, serving as an alternative to mainstream pop and rock genres, introducing young audiences to traditional and diverse musical styles, and providing a platform for political commentary. We’ll explore the relationship between the revival and its musical origins, the “discovery” of folk musicians such as Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, and the trajectory of the folk revival movement with performers including the Weavers, the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. This event is sponsored by Springbrooke, Garden Plaza of Aurora, Five Star Residences of Dayton Place, and Kaiser Permanente.
