While the cold weather and snow have started off the new year in Denver, it’s time to get prepared for the warmer seasons with a new tree.

The Park People non-profit group is now accepting applications for its Denver Digs Trees program. There are 1,400 trees available for free or low cost to Denver residents, businesses, non-profits, and schools.

“This program has it all. Choosing a tree now, in the dead of winter, plants seeds of hope for a vibrant new year,” says Lindsay Cutler, The Park People’s program director. “The Park People are here to support you in choosing, sitting, and planting your tree, whether it’s your first or 50th. We hope you’ll join us and add your tree to the existing forest of over 65,000 Denver Digs Trees.”

Applications began Jan. 7 with a deadline of Feb. 15, or while supplies last. The applications are available at TheParkPeople.org or by calling 303-722-6262 for a paper application. Street trees and yard trees are both available.

The cost for a tree is $10 in 28 Denver neighborhoods with fewer trees : Athmar Park, Auraria, Baker, Barnum, Barnum West, Chaffee Park, Clayton, Cole, College View/South Platte, East Colfax, Elyria-Swansea, Five Points, Globeville, Green Valley Ranch, Jefferson Park, Lincoln Park, MarLee, Montbello, Northeast Park Hill, Overland, Ruby Hill, Skyland, Sun Valley , Valverde, Villa Park, West Colfax, Westwood, and Whittier.

Trees are $35 in other areas of Denver, and “Treeship” free trees are available for people who are experiencing financial hardship. Pick-up and planting is scheduled for April 24–26.
