2018 marks the 13th year for the garage sale. It’s easy to picture the sidewalks filled with toys, furniture and clothing. It’s harder to quantify 12 years of such activity, but we asked Michael and Diana Kearns, the founders and organizers of this event to try.
Here’s what they came up with: Over 12 years there have been 3,601 registered participants. Adding 10 percent for unregistered participants yields a total of 3,961. Based on sellers feedback, the Kearns believe an average sale might have yielded $250. That adds up to almost one million dollars that the sale has put into our local economy ($990,250 to be exact).
And on top of that, the Kearns’s have partnered with charitable organizations for post-sale donations of unsold items. In 2010, the Denver Children’s Advocacy Center said they filled two trucks with over 17,000 pounds of donations.
This year, Stapleton resident Sandra Thebaud is organizing a clothing drive to partner with the garage sale. More info at springstrue.com/orange or sandra@springstrue.com.
