A sure sign of spring in Denver is the sound of street sweepers on city streets. Another sign of the season is parking tickets on the windshields of car owners who forgot to move out of sweeping areas.
The fine for forgetting to move a car is $50, so it’s well worth residents’ time to check the red and white signs on their block.
Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says in 2024, Denver street sweeping crews swept 113,846 lane miles, collecting 46,478 cubic yards of dirt and debris. That’s enough dirt and debris, DOTI says, to fill 14 Olympic-size swimming pools.
The annual sweeping season begins April 1st, and DOTI wants people to move their cars so the sweepers can reach the curb where dirt accumulates. The program is meant to remove dirt and debris off streets, keeping it out of the air and preventing debris from clogging up storm sewer inlets. Residents can check the signs and or sign up for email and text reminders at denvergov.org/online-services-hub. View How to Check your Street Sweeping Schedule in Denver. The posted street season runs April through November.
