SUN Denver Municipal Ballot Open House, Tuesday April 16

6:30-7:30pm, Central Park Rec Center Multipurpose Room

Stapleton United Neighbors (SUN) is hosting an open house for Northeast Denver voters to meet and speak with the candidates for city offices and representatives for and against any ballot measures to be voted on in the May 2019 Denver Municipal election. Attendance is open to the public, though only campaigns for or against measures or candidates on the ballot in the Stapleton Denver Neighborhood will be invited to have a table at the event. Through an open-house format, one-on-one and small-group conversations between residents and campaign representatives will allow attendees to ask questions to representatives and candidates. Candidates and campaigns will each have a table. Attendees will be encouraged to travel between tables to engage and ask questions. There is no cost to event participants or attendees. After brief welcoming comments from SUN, and monthly updates from Denver Police, the remainder of the hour will carry on in an open-house format. Persons and organizations interested in a table at this event should email: StapletonUnitedNeighbors@gmail.com

SUN’s 2nd Annual Community Day of Reflection. Exploring Implicit Bias

Saturday April 27, 9am-noon. Sam Gary Library

Please join SUN for an opportunity to think more deeply about our culture.

Participants will work to better recognize one’s own implicit biases, how we each unknowingly participate in forms of bias, how implicit biases are currently impacting the community, and how individual action could further shape the community. Participants will consider and discuss the following questions: Have you observed oppression differently over space (geographic regions or institutions) and time (your lived experience)? What makes oppression harder to recognize in some settings? When do you recognize your own power? When do you recognize your own privilege? When do you recognize your own prejudice? What do these things combined mean for our community? Refreshments will be provided through the Denver Sustainable Neighborhoods Program.

SUN’s Annual Community Forum May 2019

Tuesday, May 21, 6pm-9pm. The Cube, 8371 E Northfield Blvd, Denver, CO 80238

After welcoming comments from SUN and updates from Denver Police, speakers will include development updates by long-time members of the Stapleton project team, formerly employed by Forest City, now representatives of Brookfield (the Toronto-based company that acquired Forest City in November of 2018). See May Front Porch for a final list of speakers.

Sand Creek Regional Greenway Hosting Annual Fundraiser

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership is a 501(c) 3 non-profit that protects, maintains, and enhances Sand Creek Greenway, a nearly 14-mile public trail and natural area. Part of the Greenway runs through our community. SUN and SCRG have established an ongoing partnership for cleanups of the Greenway, which directly benefit the local ecosystem, human health, and economy. SCRG is hosting its annual fundraiser on Friday, May 17 at The CUBE in Northfield. The fundraiser will include light refreshments, entertainment, and a silent auction. The evening will also include a talk by Ken Salazar, former United States Senator and Secretary of the Interior, as well as announcements on critical improvements to the Denver sections of the Greenway. Tickets are $25. Doors open at 5:30pm; programming begins at 7pm. Check www.sandcreekgreenway.org or contact Beth Nobles at bnobles@sandcreekgreenway.org for event details or to purchase tickets.

Seeking nominations for a diverse Board to serve the Community

Nominations for a 2019-2021 term on the SUN board will be accepted through April 12. A slate of candidates will be voted on at the April 16th SUN Board meeting (Central Park Rec Center 7:30pm). Community members will be asked to vote on this slate at SUN’s May 21 Annual Forum (The Cube, 6:30pm). SUN is the registered neighborhood organization for the Stapleton area of Denver and is comprised solely of volunteers. Interested residents should email: StapletonUnitedNeighbors@gmail.com
