Begun 10 years ago by parents to narrow the “achievement gap,” the A+ Angels Mentor Program pairs more than 80 struggling students with adult volunteers. Fifty new freshmen want mentors in 2014-2015. Mentors meet with students once a week and help students check grades, work on homework, set up tutoring, apply for jobs, etc.
