EDITOR JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Front Porch—Northeast Denver newspaper (FrontPorchNE.com) distributes approximately 25,000 papers monthly to readers in Central Park, Park Hill, Mayfair/Montclair, Lowry and NW Aurora. The paper is looking to fill our half-time Editor position.

Editor’s primary responsibilities: 

—Generate local story ideas
—Collect ideas and enter them in our database and update through the month
—Participate in and subsequently chair twice monthly planning meetings
—Write objective and accurate articles in a concise journalistic style (the paper does not have a regular editor’s column)
—Continue the paper’s tradition of interviewing local experts to reflect on the impact of city, state, and national issues in NE Denver
—Write the NE Updates page of the paper with collaboration on contents from the planning team
—Work closely and cooperatively with the Design Editor to plan graphics and establish word counts as appropriate for each story
—Assign and edit/proof freelance writers’ work; review their invoices
—Request comments and proofs of own writing by the Associate Editor
—Proof PDF layouts of each story using Acrobat to minimize corrections in the final proof
—Proof final PDF layout
—Respond to phone and email correspondence about the paper (mobile phone with the paper’s main number is provided)
—Maintain the paper’s commitment to journalistic standards in the written product and exhibit these standards and ethics when engaging with the community and interviewees
—Meet deadlines (this is of utmost importance to meet our press schedule)

Additional responsibilities/expectations: 

—Write distribution announcement and mid-month news updates to be posted on FrontPorchNE.com website and in social media. Make mid-month posts to promote printed stories.
—Attend local meetings to keep the paper tuned in to NE Denver news and news sources
—Participate in meetings with other staff regarding any current concerns and future planning for the paper
—Participate in the selection of entries to the annual Colorado Press Contest.
—Participate in the selection of articles to be shared with the Colorado News Collaborative.

Hours: 

The job is currently half-time (approximately 20 hours per week), one of a five-person team of part-time collaborative positions. The paper is currently 16 pages. All positions and salaries will increase equally if/when the paper gets larger than 20 pages.
The Editor and other staff work remotely, communicate regularly, collaborate with each other to ensure a smooth production process, and set their own hours to complete high quality work by their deadlines.

Salary & Benefits: 

The salary of $31,200 ($2,600 monthly) is accompanied by an Acrobat subscription, a mobile phone with the business line, and a flexible schedule. The editor is responsible for covering the position in all 12 monthly issues. The position includes an additional half month’s pay at the end of each year of employment in lieu of paid time off.

Qualifications:

—Lives in NE Denver and stays in touch with NE Denver news of interest to residents
—Bachelor’s degree
—Journalism experience
—Excellent writing/editing skills
—Has own computer and online access
—Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat for proofing and editing (monthly Acrobat subscription provided)
—Computer skills to use the Front Porch content database, Dropbox, Google Docs and Sheets

About Front Porch—Northeast Denver newspaper

Front Porch was started by Forest City Stapleton, Inc. (the original master developer of Stapleton) in 2000 to keep surrounding communities and public officials informed of the progress of the development of Stapleton. The paper became independent from Forest City in 2005. In 2000, this community, now named Central Park, was a decommissioned airport with 7.5 square miles of concrete runways, concourses and terminals in a mostly industrial part of town.
