Stapleton United Neighbors (SUN) fielded a survey in early 2019, which yielding 936 complete responses between 1/14 and 2/15. Respondents were proportionately more from north of I-70 56% (n=524) and from women 65% (n=607). Racially, 86% self-identified as white, with 23% either also identified as a race/ethnicity other than white, or cohabitating with persons of non-white race/ethnicities. Half of respondents reported having lived in Stapleton for 5 or fewer years, with the other half reporting having lived here up to 17 years. Prior to living in Stapleton, 55% reported living elsewhere in Denver, with 29% having moved from out of state, 15% from outside of Denver in Colorado, and less than 1% from outside of the country.
Regarding interest in retail and amenities: A Thai restaurant was the top preferred restaurant type overall, followed by a locally owned coffee shop, a breakfast-oriented restaurant, an Indian restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant, a Japanese restaurant, a brewery / beer hall/beer garden, a specialty salad restaurant, a specialty pizza restaurant, a deli or sandwich shop, and a specialty burger restaurant. There was generally agreement between residents north/south of I-70 and respondents identifying as women vs other genders, with the exception of: men have less interest in a specialty salad restaurant, and residents south of I-70 are less interested in a beer hall.
The community demonstrated strong preference for amenities that would improve access to healthy food (Sprouts, Whole Foods, Marzcyks, Costco, Spinelli’s), physical fitness (a Denver Recreation Center), and books (Tattered Cover and a Denver Public Library).
Community response demonstrates a very low level of interest in restaurants serving fast food.
SUN strives to support issues around which there is strong community support, SUN considers the threshold of 66% in survey responses (marked on the graphs below) evidence of strong community support.
More detailed charts, posted below, show responses broken down by gender and by north and south Stapleton.
