Here are a few films that didn’t get the attention they deserved during the year. These are two smaller films that will both delight and move you—two things that we sorely need in our world right now. There is even a great deal of humor in them, something I don’t cover all that much in these pages. We need that now as well.
I spotted a white goose among the Canada geese at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge this past May. The white goose is a snow goose with black wingtips visible in flight. It has pink feet and a pink bill that has a prominent black “grin patch.”

Several new local businesses (The Baking Room, Vanishing West Ciders, and Mile Hi Pickleball) opened in September and October, all owned and operated by northeast Denver residents who are fulfilling their dreams. Front Porch visited all three locations to talk to the owners and learn about their hopes for success and support from the community and each other.
After an undefeated season, the McAuliffe International School baseball team secured the championship win in the Denver Public Schools prep league on Oct. 19, led in part by eight McAuliffe eighth graders with a uniquely shared baseball history: These eight have played together, outside of school, for nearly a decade on a neighborhood baseball team.
Kinley Graves is an entrepreneur who started a dog treats business two years ago. In a neighborhood filled with many successful business owners, she may not sound all that remarkable until she reveals her age: she just turned 10.
“Do you know how much water it takes to raise a cow?” It was a simple question, and though I could claim hog and sheep farming as part of my childhood, I didn’t know the answer.

It is once again time for the Denver Film Festival. The last few years have set records for attendance, and this year should be no different. The quality of the films remains excellent. The festival runs from November 1–10.

On a mid-October evening, voters turned out for a ballot information session led by Pearlanne Zelarney with the League of Women Voters (LWV), a non-partisan grassroots organization.
The hallways of the performing arts department at Northfield High School are almost always teeming with activity. Every day you can see students marching by with guitars and saxophones or sitting in a circle to devise a piece of theater. The school is home to 2,300 students, and around 50% of them participate in the performing arts in some capacity.
