Julie Johnson started drawing seasonal chalk greetings in front of her house on Beeler St. during the pandemic: an Easter message with colored eggs, a New Year’s greeting, a heart for Valentines Day. “It was my effort to bring a little cheer to members of the community,” she recalls.
DSA Filmmakers to Showcase 20 Films at NYC Festival in October
Sofia Macias has known she wanted to work in the film industry since she was very young. “I’ve loved horror films since I was 8 years old,” she says. A senior at the Denver School of the Arts, she recently found out that her 6-minute film Resonance was accepted into the All-American High School Film Festival in New York City.

Bird Sightings: Burrowing Owl
Most owls are nocturnal, carnivorous, and nest in trees or man-made boxes. But there is an owl named the burrowing owl that is active during the day, nests in burrows dug by prairie dogs or ground squirrels, and eats principally insects but also hunts small rodents.
A Community Ownership Model on East Colfax
This month, the East Colfax Community Collective (EC3), a local organization that works to prevent evictions, purchased a 23-unit apartment building at 1371 Xenia St. in Denver as part of an effort to create housing stability in the area and stop displacement of residents.
Indoor Pickleball Club Coming to Northeast Denver
Off I-70 in a sprawling business complex, changes are underway. In a spot where a drywall and tire business once operated, pickleball is moving in. The Mile Hi Pickleball Club, a 35,000-square-foot indoor business, is opening Oct. 18 at 3700 Havana St. Suite 305.
Volunteers Give5 for Mile High City
Two days before Denver Public Schools started classes in August, about 50 volunteers gathered in the gym at the Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center to fill 250 backpacks for low-income students and 250 boxes of supplies for teachers. It was the kickoff event for Denver First Lady Courtney Johnston’s volunteer program called Give5 Mile High.
