Black Cowboys Unveiled: Meet the Collections and Fireside Chat

March 13 @ 6:30 pm

$10 – $18

Popular culture has largely written Black cowboys out of the West. Dime novels, illustrations, paintings, and theatrical stage productions have only shown mostly white European Americans as the noted cowboy. However, evidence from History Colorado’s archives reminds us of the Black cowboy’s centrality to the story of the West.

Join Acoma Gaither, Curator of Black History, real-life Black Cowboy Maurice Wade, and Author /Artist R. Alan Brooks for a fireside chat about the facts and fiction surrounding Black cowboys and their importance in Colorado’s history.

Before and after the program, view collection pieces on display from History Colorado that tell of the centrality of Black cowboys to the story. At the end of the event, R. Alan Brooks will also sign his comic book, Nat Love: A Cowboy’s Life.

Pre-order your comic book and ticket before the event at the link on the right side of the screen. R. Alan’s new children’s book, The Mask in Your Dreams, will also be available in the museum gift shop.
