January 16 @ 6:30 pm

Free

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. came to Colorado in the 1960s during the height of the Civil Rights Movement? Join Adam Dempsey Morgan, documentarian and host of KUVO’s Groove Jazz Rendezvous, as he shows his quality film, When A King Came to Town.

This documentary will follow King’s visit to Denver and Littleton in 1964, his return in 1967 after his vocal opposition to the Vietnam War, and the local reaction to Dr. King’s assassination in April 1968.

Adam Dempsey will give a behind-the-scenes look at this visual documentation of Colorado history and will be available for a Q&A after the film.

Film Description:

The story incorporates the comments of Dr. King with the insights of community activists and leaders offering perspectives interpreting the context, activities, events, and actions occurring during his visits to Denver. Also included is insight to a then little known side trip to the suburb of Littleton during his official consulting visit in January 1964; his secon national anti-Vietnam War comments delivered at a press conference at the University of Denver; his quiet interest in exploring a partnership with the Latino community, along with a fun sidebar of how Dr. King became trapped in a changing room just prior to his community comments at Montview Presbyterian Church.
