Motivated seniors who are living on a low, fixed income and enjoy working with children are invited to join the Volunteers of America Foster Grandparents. Volunteers work in early childhood centers that focus on literacy and numeracy for at-risk children and youth. People 55 or older with an income less than $23,340 for a single-person household or under $31,460 for a couple are eligible. Foster grandparents are asked to devote 15 to 40 hours a week at a school working with children. For their time and volunteer service, the foster grandparents receive a nontaxable stipend to supplement their income that does not affect Social Security.
