Stapleton Girl Scout Troop 2895 does more than just sell cookies—they work to make the world a better place. In 2013 they studied stereotypes and how to prevent them. And they learned about what it means to be a woman in today’s world.
They met the Colorado Roller Derby team, “Bruising Altitude.” Equipped with padding, helmets and nicknames like “AnaSassin” and “Lethal Llama,” they saw that the Denver Roller Dolls are far from any dainty female stereotype.
“It inspired us to not fall into stereotypes, but to be ourselves,” troop members Maddy Levin and Elaina Weakliem wrote.
The troop also met the Colorado Rapids Women’s soccer team and learned about today’s male-dominated sports world.
“Have you ever heard that girls are not as good at sports as boys are? Or all girls like the color pink and dainty things? These are stereotypes,” they said. “In our troop, we have girls who are tomboys, girly-girls, outgoing, shy, dramatic, chatty, adventurous or cautious.”
To learn about a healthy diet, the troop also shadowed and cooked with culinary students at Johnson and Wales University.
