THE NUTCRACKER
Over 100 years old, The Nutcracker is the most widely performed ballet around the world and a time-honored holiday tradition. The score was composed by Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky and accompanies a ballet performed in two acts. The ballet tells the story of a young girl, Clara, her brother Fritz, and her family on Christmas Eve. The family hosts a party and the family is surprised by a visit from Clara’s eccentric godfather, Drosselmeyer, who presents Clara with a beautiful Nutcracker. After bedtime, Clara dreams that the Nutctracker becomes a Prince after battling an army of mice. He takes Clara to the Land of Sweets where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells of the daring battle and they are rewarded with a celebration of dances representing countries from around the world. At the end of the ballet, Clara awakens from her dream and finds herself by her Christmas tree with her beloved Nutcracker.
