Eirina, an eight-year-old female Sumatran orangutan arrived from Germany’s Zoo Dortmund in September and has made her home in the Denver Zoo’s Primate Panorama. Zookeepers are hopeful that Eirina will breed with 14-year-old Bernas, nicknamed “Junie” by visitors and staff. Eirina came to Colorado upon recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariams’ Species Survival Plan, which ensures genetic diversity and healthy populations in zoo animals. Orangutan means “person of the forest” in the Malay language and the species is among the closest relatives to humans. Visitors to the zoo can see Eirina in the Great Apes Primate Building in the Primate Panorama. For more information visit www.DenverZoo.org.
