As a child, traditional teaching methods didn’t feel like a good fit to Winifred R. Harris. Then she started dancing. “When I discovered dance, I understood there was a part of me that was really bigger than the outside world allowed me to think of myself,” she says. It was through that interpretation of movement and connectivity with people that Harris started to grow into the person she is today. And that’s what’s behind the name of her business, Your Soul’s Movement, newly opened in Northfield. “It’s whatever your soul is opening up to do,” she says.
With three studios, dressing rooms, a lounge area and boutique, and classes available for babies through adults, Your Soul’s Movement wants to be many things to many people. The performing arts studio offers lessons in music, dance and theater with a Recreational Track and an Academy Track for students interested in pursuing the arts professionally. Classes are varied, including classical ballet, opera, African drum, acting, voice, Zumba and parent/tot classes. Schedules are set up so that parents can take classes with their children or pursue their own interests taking classes at the same time. There are even plans for monthly and quarterly opportunities to learn salsa dancing, health discussions or written word performances.
A Denver native and Stapleton resident, Harris’ passion for the performing arts is founded in her early lessons with Colorado dancer and choreographer Cleo Parker Robinson. Harris then taught and toured internationally and ran her own dance company in California for 18 years before returning to Denver, where she is currently the associate artistic director for Cleo Parker Robinson Dance. Your Soul’s Movement is another creative outlet and expression for Harris that will allow for potential partnerships and performance opportunities in-studio and throughout the community.
Harris is looking forward to helping people discover their passions. “We all have a gift—whether or not we want to ignite it is up to us. But with great training and great direction, it allows you to have a better sense of who you are, as you’re doing what it is you do.”
