Principal Avi Tropper hosted a community forum at Bill Roberts High School on Monday June 2. More than 40 parents, prospective students, and members of the community listened as Tropper provided updates about his plans for school culture and academics. Among these updates were the school name: Northfield High School (NHS), the new website: northfield.dpsk12.org, and two potential school color palettes—blue and gold or purple, silver, and light blue.
Tropper reiterated Denver Public School’s (DPS) commitments to guarantee all Stapleton residents a seat at NHS, while also ensuring a diverse student body and serving the region’s needs. To achieve these ends, DPS issued a slightly different boundary proposal to the school board than the one The Front Porch reported on last week. The new boundary proposal, presented to the board on June 2, consists of the following recommendations:
1. All Stapleton and Monaco Corridor residents are guaranteed a seat. Monaco Corridor residents also get priority at George Washington High School.
2. 35 percent of the total seats will be allocated to choice, prioritized thusly:
a. All Far North East residents, regardless of Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) status
b. Park Hill FRL students who attended a shared boundary middle school
c. Students across Denver with FRL status
d. Park Hill students, without FRL status
e. Denver students, without FRL status
Although the school board will not be voting on these recommendations until later this month, Tropper expressed confidence that this proposal held wide support.
In a convivial yet candid manner, Tropper explained his reasoning for selecting the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program over Advanced Placement. He supported his multifaceted approach to developing school culture with references to cutting edge research, community surveys, as well as his own observations of best practices.
At several points during his presentation, Tropper’s direct engagement with prospective students elicited laughter from the audience. Hazel Creighton, who will be in NHS’s inaugural class, sat right up front and was particularly enthused about the later start time Tropper proposed—somewhere in the 8:45-9:00am range. Creighton is also eager to learn more about NHS’s engineering elective pathway.

Boundaries are not specific…still dont know what the street boundaries are they are describing….assuming its Montview to the south? What about far NE. What does that mean? More specifics would be helpful….
What was the reasoning behind the school colors and name? The article above did not cover that. It will be Northfield High School and no longer Stapleton High School? Should we rename Stapleton to Northfield? I would suggest that a high school name should reflect the immediate community, which builds school pride.
