Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Need

When SNAP benefits were suspended in November, people in northeast Denver and northwest Aurora stepped up to help residents who need food and the organizations that work to end hunger.

Stanley Marketplace Joined a Community Donation Drive

At Stanley Marketplace, donations near the main entrance continued to stack up through November. People dropped off food, diapers, and hygiene products to support the northwest Aurora Village Exchange Center, which provides services to immigrants, including weekly food pantries, vaccinations, career and education counseling, legal services, and a community farm.

The drive was part of a food hall community initiative with six other venues around the metro area that collected food in a friendly competition.

F3 Members Run for a Cause

In the early morning hours of a November day, 10 members of the men’s workout group F3 Central Park Ruck went out in the dark to collect food from neighbors in the Beeler Park neighborhood of Central Park. The group collected canned goods for the Park Hill Food Pantry.

F3—which stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith—was created to foster friendship between men and to promote community service. Organizers said they wanted to do something simple to help provide food to local food banks.

Mach 983 Gives Back to the Community

A fire next door to the Mach983 CrossFit on Dayton St., Aurora, in October, caused the business to relocate to Mile Hi Pickleball. The community rallied to help the business move, and the owner returned that support by sponsoring a food drive. A competition is going on among the gyms’ classes to see which one can bring in the most food and raise the most money. Local businesses are also supporting the effort, according to Mach983 owner Fred Dayton. The drive runs through Dec. 15.

Students at William “Bill” Roberts K-8 School in Central Park heard about the cuts to government food benefits in November and decided to act.

About 30 students got together to fundraise for the Food Bank of the Rockies, a hunger-relief organization in northeast Denver that provides food across Colorado and Wyoming

“I want to fill the empty bellies of kids who have no food,” said sixth grader Sam Levine.

Sixth grader Graham Neumeyer added, “I believe that every human being should have enough food to eat every day.”

The students set a goal of $3,000 and reached that amount within a couple of weeks. They are continuing to raise money through the holidays and were on their way to a $5,000 goal at publication time.

“This is important to me so we can help make sure everyone has enough to eat,” said third grader Abby Rabida.
