Train horns will continue for several months, announced RTD General Manager Dave Genova in a hastily called news conference today. He said the A Line remains out of compliance with Federal Railway Administration (FRA) standards related to the timing of crossing gate closures.
RTD is operating under an FRA waiver that expires Nov. 5. RTD hopes to learn from FRA next week whether recent software fixes will allow the A Line’s safety system to be fully certified. After certification, the process to fully implement the quiet zone will take at least 90 additional days before the trains stop sounding their horns. Genova assured the audience that safety remains RTD’s number one priority and that the A Line is operating safely.
