As a shirt-and-tie-wearing Cary Grant-emulating teenager, Richard Humbert knew he wanted to be a haberdasher. Today, he is, indeed, selling men’s (and women’s) clothing at his new store, The Gentry & The Lady. A Stapleton resident, Humbert first got a taste for dressing well as a teen in Philadelphia, working as head print boy at an architecture firm, on a street lined with boutiques. “I’d walk by those shops and say, ‘Someday I’m going to own a shop and someday I’m going to be able to shop at a place like this.’” Humbert bought a clothing store out of college. With his love of fine clothing and training as an accountant, he says, “It all fits with what I’m doing. I want people to go to ‘that guy who made me look really nice and feel good.’”
Humbert is the president of The Gentry & The Lady and his business partner, also a Stapleton resident, Winifred Harris is the buyer. On the women’s side, clothing is generally by European designers and the focus is on Italian designs for men. They pride themselves on being socially and environmentally-conscious, buying fair trade clothing with natural fibers and repurposed materials whenever possible. They want to be considered the go-to boutique for the community and offer a neighborhood discount for people for a limited time.
Providing custom fitting and alterations, buying with the customer’s likes in mind and helping customers find their style is their goal. It’s old-fashioned retail that Humbert hopes shoppers will appreciate. “You can buy an outfit here and not see yourself three times before you get to where you are going,” he says, adding that they only buy six to eight of any item and don’t reorder it. “We like people who are fashion-conscious, but we love people who don’t know exactly how to achieve the look they want. That’s what we’re here for.”
Visit the shop at 8246 Northfield Blvd., Suite 1430 and give them a call at 720.335.6454.
