Today, now more than ever, we face as a society the ongoing issue of sexual harassment among children, teens, and adults. As a young female I have taken it upon myself to try and construct a safer place for us all. But how may you ask, could one person fix such a wide and mainstream issue? With each action taken we can begin to eradicate this problem starting with the idea of teaching girls self defense mechanisms. Schools should offer a class to teach girls how to defend themselves not only verbally but physically. By schools developing and implementing a class of self defense, girls would learn and use skills which would be put in place in times where soccer, volleyball, and hockey, don’t suffice. A class where girls are taught empowerment and confidence could not only affect them in a situation of harassment but in their day to day lives. Rape is the most undereported crime as 63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police. Why is that many of these cases go unreported? What is causing people not speak up? We as a society have a responsibility to raise awareness and take action starting in schools.
