For Central Park resident Evo Montoya, basketball is life.

The Northfield High School rising senior first picked up a basketball at age 6. Since then, he has spent years honing his game, traveling around the country with a club team, and serving as captain of the school’s varsity boys basketball team.

But by the time he reached eighth grade, Montoya noticed  many young people didn’t have access to the same opportunities he did.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have trainers, mentors, and high-level coaches that have helped me. I know that’s not the case with all kids,” Montoya said. “I just want to give back with something I’m personally good at.”

He decided to create Global Ballers, a nonprofit basketball clinic designed specifically for elementary school students from immigrant families.

Now in its fourth year, the two-day clinic introduces 30 children annually to a sport some have never played before. More than just teaching basketball skills, Montoya hopes to create a welcoming environment where kids can build confidence, make friends, and feel connected to their community.

“It’s meant for the kids to have fun but also for them to understand basketball and give them exposure to resources,” Montoya said.

To make the clinic a reality, Montoya recruited coaches and two professional trainers willing to donate their time. He also organized donations of basketballs, shoes, and clothing to ensure every player had the equipment needed. The clinic is free for participants.

His work has not gone unnoticed. This spring, Montoya received a Denver Public Schools Student Achievement Award in recognition of his leadership and service.

As he considers opportunities to continue playing basketball in college, Montoya is already thinking about the future of Global Ballers. His goal is to ensure the clinic continues long after he graduates.

“It’s so great for the kids,” he said. “And it really brings people together.”
